It takes teamwork to make the dream work

OAC Weekly Snapshot, April 14-18

Lots of good stuff happening this week, both with in-person meetings and virtual connections.

  • OAC Principals Collaborative final meeting this week
We had a great day with the OAC Principals Collaborative on Tuesday! The morning learning sessions were outstanding, with presentations from Dr. Judy VanVoorhis on the Common Core, and Dr. Melanie Horvath on Response to Intervention. Also, principals self-facilitated issues from the field. If you missed the Principals Collaborative or want to learn more about the sessions, contact Mark Glasbrenner
  • Join OAC Twitter Chats Wednesdays at 8 p.m.
This week's OAC Twitter chat focused on assessments, and was hosted by River View's own Christie Ireland (@IrelandChristie). Lots of great conversation focused on the purpose and uses of both formative and summative assessments, and great ideas and resources were shared as well. Check out an archive of this week's chat on the Collaboration Space here.

These chats are happening every week on Wednesdays at 8 p.m. It's been great to see the conversations grow and new folks join. If you want to participate, just log into Twitter at the time of the chat, search the hashtag #OACteach, and watch and participate in the conversation. If you tweet, make sure to include the hashtag!
  • Increasing Dual Enrollment Opportunities in the OAC
  • The Quality Matters professional development series wrapped up this week after three workshops designed to increase dual enrollment opportunities via blended and online learning approaches. K-12 educators and higher education faculty identified the top two professional development needs for this area:
    • Optimizing instructional design and emerging technologies for blended learning
    • Enhancing or expanding engagement and communication in the virtual environment of blended learning courses
Do you agree? Check out this blog from Linda Knicely summing up the next steps and the plans to address these issues this school year.

  • Learn About the OAC Professional Practice Badges!

The OAC Professional Practice badges are a big hit! Conversation and discussions are growing every day. More than 20 OAC educators have earned the Share and Tweet Badges, with lots more working through the badge tasks. More details about how you can earn the Share and Tweet badges can be found in this
Connecting, Learning, and Sharing blog post from Julie Vujevich.

We're looking ahead to the 2014-15 school year with badges designed to build capacity in specific content areas like Common Core, project-based learning, and much more!

New Resources and Discussions

  • Districts Share Assessment Literacy Plans
Through the Ohio TIF grant, participating TIF districts have access to a collaboration space designed solely around sharing content and information about assessment literacy and SLOs. Ohio TIF districts are posting their implementation plans for assessment literacy on the Ohio TIF Collaboration Space. There are a wide variety of approaches and other districts may find them useful as they plan their own PD and implementation.

  • OCIS Transitions to OhioMeansJobs K-12
The initial phase of this transition requires current OCIS users to print or save their Portfolios outside of OCIS. In addition, students can now register with OhioMeansJobs K-12 and create their Backpacks. There is more in this post about online information sessions offered through the Ohio Department of Education.

  • Teach Science and Arts Together
Melanie Wightman asks you to consider this personalized learning strategy: teach science and arts together. There is a strong case that both arts and scientists are equally analytic and creative. Look to Emily Pilloton for a great example of how to combine these studies through Project H.
