OAC Connected Educator Spotlight: Joel Moore

October is Connected Educator Month!

In celebration of Connected Educator Month, we'll be recognizing a few of our OAC connected educators who are using digital and social media to build relationships, share knowledge, and enhance their own professional learning. Each week, we'll post an OAC Connected Educator Spotlight  featuring answers to five questions about their experience as a connected educator, advice to other educators, and tools they use. Now let's get started!

Meet Joel Moore, a Connected Principal

1. What is your definition of a “connected educator?”

My definition of a connected educator is someone who has made the decision to become their own “Superman.” Someone who is not content to wait for others to provide them with what others think they should know. Someone who has leveraged the tools that are available to connect people to the resources that will help them make a difference.

2. How did you get started?

My personal learning network (PLN) as a connected educator started when my good friend Mr. Frank Polen, another connected principal in our district, piqued my interest with references from his Twitter account. At the time, I didn’t know the difference between the # sign and the @ sign symbols. To get started, I simply started following people that he followed because we had the same interests.

At about the same time, I began following blogs. I started using Feedly reader and added the “top 100 educational blogs” to my inbox list. It didn’t take me long to realize I needed a way to save, annotate, and retrieve the vast amount of information I had coming my way. I began using Diigo to manage that “problem.”

At first, my PLN was one way traffic: inbound. After signing up for Blogger, I began sharing my own experiences and reflections in blogs with my followers.

3. What tools (e.g., Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, etc.) do you use? 

I have a Twitter account and now use Tweetdeck and Twubs to compliment my Twitter experiences. I use Diigo to manage my blog feeds and also have a blog of my own. I have used a wiki with my staff for eight years, and for parent communications, I use Google+ and a traditional school website.

4. What value has being a connected educator brought you?

The value of being connected for me is largely a personal one. By connecting with other educators who share my passion of teaching and leading, I am providing others the opportunity to help me grow the value of my staff and students. And in return, I hope to help them just as much.

5. What advice do you have for educators who want to get started?
My advice to others for starting and growing their PLN is to first make a commitment to taking charge of their own learning. Throw out the idea of waiting for professional development to be delivered by the “experts.” Instead, seek out the experts on your own and jumpstart your own learning for your own convenience. Chances are someone you know is already connected. Ask them to help get you connected. It’s easier than you think.
