It takes teamwork to make the dream work

Our Story. Our Values.

Storytelling is always compelling, right? Here’s our story, short and sweet.

Once upon a time there were 21 rural school districts in southeast Ohio. Every day, they shared the common goal to ensure all students are prepared for success in college, careers, and life, but working alone they often lacked the resources and capacity to accomplish everything they set their minds to. One day in 2010, the Ohio Appalachian Collaborative was established, in partnership with these 21 districts and Battelle for Kids, to design and implement an innovative approach to transforming rural education. Because of that, we joined forces to create sustainable change in education – not only to prepare our students for bright futures, but also to positively impact the communities and economies in the region. And because of that, we work together to:

OAC Values

  • Stay ahead of the curve. As part of the OAC, we work to know and understand what's coming in the educational landscape and prepare for what's next.
  • Learn and share. We collaborate, pure and simple.
  • Join forces to generate resources. We team up with each other to secure and share resources to accomplish our common, educational goals.
  • Influence. Though small in size, OAC districts together work to share impact stories, influence rural education reform at local, state, and national levels, and strengthen the support of our work.
  • Build a community. Through our partnership, we have opportunities to connect, communicate, and collaborate with each other through various meetings, workshops and digital and social media tools.
All of this is done in an effort to build trusted partnerships, learn together and collaborate to enhance rural education to improve our students’ success.

The story above is based on the “Pixar Pitch” from Daniel Pink’s book “To Sell is Human: The Surprising Truth About Moving Others.” We believe defining and sharing your story is a must, as it builds collective understanding and trust within an organization and helps strengthen support for the work beyond the organization.
