The Measuring Student Growth in Classrooms module prepares educators to:

  • Classify levels of mastery of the essential learning
  • Plan and create pre- and post-assessments that capture where students enter and exit the learning
  • Measure and classify student achievement and growth
  • Understand how the Student Learning Objective (SLO) process can be used to cultivate student ownership in the classroom

This module contains three segments.

Each segment takes about an hour to complete. We recommend taking a blended learning approach, where each segment is discussed with others to put the ideas into action.

Prior knowledge of formative instructional practices is recommended.

Segment One: Essential Learning and Clear Learning Targets
You will see how creating and using clear learning targets can help you select and organize the essential learning for your SLO. In this segment, you will see how student ownership of learning helps students gain a clear vision of the most important learning goals.

Segment Two: Planning and Creating Pre- and Post-Assessments
You will see how collecting and documenting evidence of student learning supports your SLO pre- and post-assessment designs. In this segment you will see how student ownership of learning helps students understand how they will be expected to demonstrate learning.

Segment Three: Measuring Learning - From Readiness to Mastery and Beyond
You will see how analyzing evidence and providing effective feedback helps you measure growth in a way that supports learning. In this segment you will see how student ownership of learning helps students communicate how far they've come in their learning.
